“The Pearl of Africa”

George Churchill, the then Prime Minister of Britain, after touring Africa concluded that Uganda was indeed the “Pearl of Africa.” Indeed he was right. The River Nile, one of the longest rivers in the world, starts its long journey to the Mediterranean Sea, from Uganda. The country is home to Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and second largest fresh water lake in the world. The lake has beautiful white sand beaches, with cool fresh lake breezes. Mt. Rwenzori, considered as the third highest mountain in Africa, is also in Uganda. More than half of the 600 still living mountain gorillas in the world are found in Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks in Uganda. In addition, Uganda boasts of varieties of wildlife available in its African savannah national parks, game reserves, forests reserves and swamps. Uganda has over 1,061 species of birds so far recorded.

From the endangered mountain gorilla to the African elephant and lion, ganda is home to a wide variety of animal species. Preserving Uganda’s wildlife habitats is critical for the lives of local people as well as the survival of these species and the ecosystems on which they depend.

Both inside and outside of protected areas, there is a high density and diversity of species. However, a number of factors, including poaching, encroachment, habitat loss and degradation, conflicts between people and wildlife, and climate change, pose a threat to this richness.

How can we help wildlife
1. Don’t eat bushmeat from endangered or protected wildlife.

2. Grow native plants, trees and medicinal herbs in your school, home or on communal land and encourage other people to protect and care for them.

3. Develop woodlots to reduce pressure on wildlife habitats.

4. Report people in possession of illegal animals or wildlife to the concerned authorities.

5. Reduce over consumption of resources that have a direct impact to wildlife survival such as firewood etc.

6. Report people dealing in pet trade.

7. Don’t hunt or report those engaged in illegal and unregulated hunting practices.
